Q: What are xanthelasma?

A: A xanthelasma is a harmless yellow bump on or near your eyelid skin. Also called cholesterol deposit, a xanthelasma can be soft, chalky or semi-solid.

Removal options range from surgery to using CO2 laser or chemical peel.

The carbon dioxide (CO2) laser is one of the treatment options used for xanthelasma. This office procedure done under local anesthesia is fast and easy. The lipomatous yellow plaques are accurately photovaporized in a bloodless field, layer by layer, until the lesion is totally eradicated. However, even if the full dermal layer is removed, the lesion can recur due to the residual lipid deposits.
