Q: Doc, how do you define sensitive skin?
Do I have it and how should my skincare routine like?
A: Many people say they have sensitive skin.
But by definition, how do we determine you are having one?
Generally, we are looking for 3 groups of signs & symptoms:
1. Skin reactions such as pustules, skin bumps, or skin erosion
2. Very dry skin
3. A tendency toward blushing and skin flushing
You need to see a doctor to find out if you have sensitive skin or whether something else is causing your skin condition.
How should you take care of your skin if you have a sensitive one?
First thing first, the #cleansing step.
You should not be using a soap-based cleanser which contains deodorant, fragrance or strong detergents. Soap-free gentle liquid facial cleansers have less potential for facial skin irritation than soaps.
Secondly, #moistorizing. Moisturizers help skin to lock in the hydration and protect the skin from dryness, itchiness and abrasion.
Thirdly, #protecting. Look for product that can protect the skin against external aggression and diminish redness. For instance, shea butter, glycerin, colloidal oatmeal and panthenol which will heal and hydrate your skin.
What should we actually look for in skincare for sensitive skin?
The best guideline to follow is to choose something simple and skin-friendly which contains only a ingredients with or fragrance.
Next, avoid products containing antibacterial or deodorant ingredients,
alcohol, retinoids or alpha-hydroxy acids.
Hope these information helps
