Q: How does Clindamycin for acne work?
A: Red, painful and inflamed acne is due to infection of a clogged pore trapped with the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes.
Clindamycin is an antibiotic. It works by slowing down the growth of bacteria, or by preventing bacteria from multiplying altogether. In other words, it works by stopping the bacteria that cause inflamed, infected acne from growing.
Still remember what are the causes of acne❓
That’s right, overproduction of sebum and dead skin cells clogging the pores are 2 other major contributing factors of acne.
Although clindamycin doesn’t stop your sebaceous glands from producing sebum or clear away dead skin cells, its effects on bacteria make it a useful treatment if you’re prone to breakouts of infected, inflamed acne.
Research shows that clindamycin works well for acne. It is often used alongside other medications to treat acne from multiple angles.
Clindamycin when used along with benzoyl peroxide (an anti-bacterial agent) can produce a synergistic effect (combined effectiveness rises in many folds) in the treatment of acne. Benzoyl peroxide also has a mild drying effect that allows excess oil and dirt to be washed away. Combination with benzoyl peroxide can also reduce antibiotic resistance significantly.
Clindamycin works very effectively, especially when it’s used in combination with other acne medications.
