Contact dermatitis is the most common side effect of kojic acid. It can manifest itself as redness, irritation, itchiness, rashes, swollen skin, or pain and discomfort. This is most common in people with sensitive skin or using it in a concentration of higher than 1% kojic acid.
Long-term use may make your skin more susceptible to sunburn. So, sunscreen plays a very important role here when wearing product with kojic acid.
We should never use kojic acid on damaged or broken skin. Some countries have banned this product because of a potential connection to the development of cancer.
Kojic Acid is overall considered a safe brightening ingredient when used in the right concentration.
