Q: What is tranexamic acid?
A: Tranexamic acid is another new wonder ingredient that you can add on to your skin whitening list. It can be used to treat pigmentation and for skin brightening.
Tranexamic acid is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine. Tranexamic acid has anti-inflammatory action, it inhibits the tyrosinase synthesis in melanocytes. At the same time it blocks the transfer of pigment from melanocytes to keratinocytes in the epidermis. These 2 actions will prevent new spots and lighten existing pigmentation.
Tranexamic acid also calms the skin and helps restore the skin barrier. In fact, tranexamic acid decreases the skin’s sensitivity to UV – this is why the ingredient is so popular in Asia. It does not cause any side effects when used topically.
To date, tranexamic acid is found to be effective on melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Compare to hydroquinone which is the gold standard for melasma, the side effects of hydroquinone + dexamethasone were significantly prominent compared with tranexamic acid.
In conclusion, tranexamic acid is a safe alternative for melasma without any unwanted side effect.
