Q: Why do we get a pigmented spot after a skin injury?

A: Skin injury causes the skin to become reactive and inflamed. This process triggers our pigment producing cells called melanocytes to produce excessive melanin. This pigment in turn stays in the previously wounded area and remains darken.

This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and it usually takes about 3 to 6 months to slowly fade away. The most common cause of this type of pigmentation on the face is due to acne. So, make sure to treat your acne early to save all these trouble later.
