A: This is a form of dermatitis which is commonly seen in children and young adults. It is called pityriasis alba.
It usually presents as dry, scaly white patches on the face, frequently following exposure to sunlight. This could be due to tanning of surrounding skin makes affected areas more prominent.
It is often asymptomatic. However, some may experience mild itchiness and redness of the skin. The cause of pityriasis alba is unknown.
No treatment is necessary for asymptomatic cases. It usually resolves on its own, clearing up after a few months. But in some cases it may also persist for up to two or three years. The skin colour gradually returns completely to normal.
Although no treatment is necessary, a moisturizer will help in relieving the dryness. A mild steroid cream may relieve the redness and itch if they are present.
This condition is however need to be differentiated from another skin condition which can also caused hypopigmentation of the skin i.e. fungal infection (pityriasis versicolor). So it is crucial to seek medical attention if your child has this condition in order to get an accurate diagnosis.
